Sales tax and VAT software for Stripe

Stripe Tax calculates at the checkout and tells you about a threshold after you have crossed it. It counts Stripe revenue only, it cannot tell a wholesale sale from a retail one, and registration outside the US runs through a partner. Commenda covers all of that from the same Stripe data, across all 50 states and 70+ countries.

Integration connection between platform and Commenda

Hear about a threshold before you cross it

Stripe sends its threshold notification after you hit a threshold, and only once your business passes 10,000 USD in yearly revenue. Commenda measures your Stripe transactions against economic and physical thresholds in all 50 states and 70+ countries, and notifies you at 80%.

Count the revenue Stripe cannot see

Stripe Tax monitors Stripe-processed sales plus transactions you send in through its API. Commenda reads every channel you sell through into one ledger tagged by ship-to state, across 100+ integrations, so a threshold is measured once.

Register and file without assembling a vendor stack

Stripe registers you in US states where you are a remote seller and routes everything else to a partner, with filing split across four more. Commenda registers and files across all 50 states and 70+ countries from one platform.

Coverage comparison

What Stripe Tax handles, and what it hands back

Stripe Tax calculates and collects, and it does part of the rest. Its figures come from Stripe's own documentation on monitoring your obligations, registering, filing and remitting, zero tax amounts, tax IDs, and supported countries, checked on July 30, 2026.

Setup

How to setup the Stripe integration

Open Integrations, pick Stripe, and authorize the account. Transactions flow in on their own, history included, and your exposure summary is already populated when you land back on the dashboard.

Calculate taxes globally on Stripe using Commenda

Most customers on Stripe leave Stripe Tax switched on at the checkout, and the transactions sync across with the tax already applied and the source recorded, so nothing is taxed twice. If you would rather calculate with us, your platform calls Commenda first and the tax comes back as a line item before the charge reaches Stripe.

Track your global exposure from Stripe

Stripe sends its threshold notification after you hit a threshold in a location. Commenda measures the same Stripe transactions against economic thresholds in all 50 states and 70+ countries and tells you at 80%, before you cross. A short questionnaire covers physical presence too, because a warehouse or a remote employee never shows up on a charge.

Automatically remit transactions around the world

Stripe files US returns through TaxJar and routes the rest to Taxually, Marosa, and Hands-off Sales Tax, each covering different regions on its own pricing. Commenda builds the return straight from your Stripe data and files across all 50 states, plus EU VAT with OSS and GST in APAC and Canada, with amendments where a period needs correcting.

Manage your customers and exemptions in one place

Stripe applies the reverse charge as long as a tax ID matches the expected number format, whether or not the number is real. Commenda holds a verified tax ID on the customer record, with the system it came from. Certificates work the same way. Your customers upload through a portal, each one is validated on upload, and it applies automatically where it is valid.

Consolidation

Why Stripe Tax over-warns and under-counts

Stripe Tax reads one system and fills the gaps with assumptions. Both directions cost you: an alert for a state you do not owe, and silence on revenue that never went through Stripe. Commenda solves that.

  • Stripe Tax cannot tell a wholesale sale from a retail one

Stripe lists the assumptions behind its own alerts. Its monitoring documentation states that it assumes every sale carries your preset tax code and is taxable at the destination, and that it cannot differentiate retail from wholesale, or marketplace from non-marketplace sales. A state where most of your revenue is resale or exempt can still trip an alert. We have seen one fire for a country where no obligation existed at all.

  • Stripe sees the revenue that runs through Stripe

Stripe says plainly that it only monitors Stripe-processed sales or imported transactions. A marketplace, a reseller, an app store, or an invoice raised in your ledger all count toward the same state threshold and none of them appear. Application fees a Connect platform charges do not count either, and a platform's connected accounts are excluded from its own thresholds unless you change the setting.

  • Your home state is a blind spot by design

Stripe states that it provides insight into the places where you do not have a physical presence, so obligations are not monitored for your home US state or country. Physical nexus never shows up on a charge either. An office, a warehouse, or one remote employee creates an obligation with no revenue threshold to cross first.

  • One number per state, whatever it came through

Stripe connects from the dashboard with no engineering work, and so does everything else you sell through, across 100+ integrations. Each transaction keeps its origin, its product tax code, and any tax already collected, so an app store sale that was never yours to tax stays separate from a direct charge that needs it. You get one exposure figure per state and one return per period.

What it costs

What Stripe Tax costs as you grow

Stripe publishes its tax pricing in full, down to per-country filing fees, so every figure here is Stripe's own. Two worth reading twice: the pay-as-you-go percentage applies to the transaction amount including the tax it just calculated, and the registrations and filings bundled into a plan are capped per tier.

What you are paying forWhat Stripe charges
Calculating tax at the checkout, pay as you go0.5% of the volume you process where you are registered. Stripe states that volume includes the complete transaction amount, including the sales tax it just calculated
Calculating tax through the API instead0.50 USD per Transaction API call and 0.05 USD per Calculation API call, with 10 calculations included per transaction. Unused calculation calls do not carry over
Registrations and filings included in the priceOnly on Tax Complete, an annual contract paid monthly, and only where Stripe supports it in your region. Pay as you go covers calculation and collection only
What the entry Tax Complete tier covers90 USD a month for 200 transactions, 2,000 calculations, 2 registrations a year, and 4 filings a year. The three tiers above it are 430, 1,000, and 1,500 USD a month
One more US registration or return than your tier allows150 USD per extra registration and 55 USD per extra filing. Inside your tier, US registrations and US and Canada filings carry no separate fee
A registration outside the United States150 USD on top of your tier, and it still consumes one of the registrations the tier includes. Colombia is listed at 1,050 USD, and 1,200 USD as an overage
One VAT return in Europe45 USD monthly or 145 USD quarterly if you are EU based. 145 and 445 USD if you need fiscal representation. Mexico is 945 USD and Japan is 4,745 USD
Being charged when no tax was dueThe calculation fee still applies. Stripe documents it as distinct from the transaction, charged even when the payment is not collected, the charge is disputed, or the tax comes out at zero

The platform works exactly the way I need it to. I have one team member who manages all of our exemption certificates, and that functionality has been particularly efficient for us. It allows him to handle everything seamlessly, making the handoff significantly easier.
