Step 1 · Format check

The number's structure, length, and checksum are validated against the country's rules - catching typos before they reach an invoice.

Step 2 · Registry match

The ID is then matched against the official government source - VIES for EU VAT, the national tax authority's registry elsewhere - so the result reflects live registration status.

40+ countries

EU and UK VAT, India GSTIN, Australia ABN, Canada BN, Brazil CNPJ, Mexico RFC, and more - one tool for every market you sell into.

What is a global tax ID verification tool?

A global tax ID verification tool checks whether a tax identification number is valid, active, and registered with the relevant tax authority - in any of the countries you do business with, from one place. It confirms three things: the number is correctly formatted for its country, it exists in the authority's registry, and it belongs to a registered business - so you can apply the correct tax treatment with confidence.

Example: a customer gives you an EU VAT number to zero-rate a B2B sale. Verification against VIES confirms the business exists and the number is eligible for the exemption - before you take on the liability of not charging VAT.

Format validation vs registry verification

These are two different checks, and this tool performs both:

  • Format validation confirms the number could exist: right length, right structure, valid checksum for the country. It catches typos and fabricated numbers instantly, but a well-formed number can still belong to nobody.
  • Registry verification confirms the number does exist: it is matched against the official government source - VIES for EU VAT, the national tax authority's registry elsewhere - so the result reflects the authority's live registration status.

Tools that stop at format validation miss deregistered businesses, revoked numbers, and fraud built on plausible-looking IDs. For tax treatment decisions - zero-rating a B2B sale, accepting a reverse-charge invoice - the registry check is the one that protects you in an audit.

Why validate tax IDs?

  • Avoid charging the wrong tax - an invalid number behind a zero-rated invoice makes you liable for the uncollected tax, plus penalties and interest.
  • Reduce compliance risk - tax authorities expect businesses to verify counterparty IDs for B2B transactions, cross-border sales, and marketplace operations.
  • Prevent fraud - fake or inactive tax IDs are a common ingredient in fraudulent transactions. Validation surfaces them before money moves.
  • Speed up onboarding - instant validation removes a manual review step from customer and vendor onboarding.

How to verify a tax ID

  1. Select the country - each jurisdiction has its own ID format and registry.
  2. Enter the tax ID - paste the number exactly as provided, including the country prefix for EU VAT numbers.
  3. Run verification - the ID is checked against the official source: VIES for EU VAT, the national tax-authority registry elsewhere.
  4. Review the result - validity, registration status, and the registered business name where the authority exposes it.

Which tax IDs can you verify?

Coverage spans 40+ countries and the major indirect-tax ID systems:

  • VAT numbers - all EU member states (via VIES), the UK, Norway, Switzerland, and the UAE.
  • GST numbers - India (GSTIN), Australia (ABN), Canada (BN), Singapore, and New Zealand.
  • Country-specific business IDs - Brazil (CNPJ), Mexico (RFC), Japan (corporate number), South Korea, and more.

Who uses this tool?

  • SaaS & digital businesses - validate B2B customers so reverse-charge and zero-rating are applied correctly.
  • E-commerce companies - confirm business buyers at checkout for accurate tax calculation.
  • Marketplaces - verify seller tax IDs during onboarding to meet platform liability rules.
  • Finance & compliance teams - keep validation logs that stand up in an audit.

Tax ID validation vs full tax compliance

Validation answers one question: is this number good? Compliance is everything that follows - registering where you have obligations, calculating the right rate, filing on time.

As you grow, validation alone isn't enough. Commenda registers your entities, tracks every filing deadline, and handles global indirect tax end to end - so the check you run here is the first step of a managed pipeline, not a one-off.

Best practices for tax ID validation

  • Validate in real time - at onboarding and at invoice time, not after the fact.
  • Store the evidence - keep a timestamped validation log; it's your defense in an audit.
  • Automate the workflow - integrate API-based validation into checkout and vendor onboarding.
  • Revalidate periodically - registrations lapse; recheck active counterparties on a set cadence.
