Sales tax and VAT software for Zoho Books

Zoho Books files UK VAT to HMRC and pushes GST returns to the GSTN in India. It files nothing in the United States, and it applies tax only where you told it you are registered. Commenda covers both gaps from the same Zoho Books data, across all 50 states and 70+ countries.

Integration connection between platform and Commenda

Monitor your global exposure

Zoho Books applies tax based on the state registrations you enter. Commenda measures the same transactions against economic and physical thresholds in all 50 states and 70+ countries, and notifies you at 80% of a threshold.

One platform across every Zoho edition

Zoho states that taxes are handled differently in each edition, and that one organisation cannot hold tax registrations for two countries. Commenda sits above every organisation and reports one exposure figure per jurisdiction.

File the US returns Zoho Books does not

Zoho Books files UK VAT to HMRC and pushes GST returns to the GSTN in India. It files nothing in the United States. Commenda files across all 50 states, the EU with OSS, and GST in APAC and Canada.

What Zoho Books handles, and what it hands back

Zoho Books runs a separate edition per country, and which one you signed up for changes most of the answers below. Its figures come from Zoho's help centre on the US Sales Tax Automation, UK VAT, India GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing, Canadian tax returns, organisation profile, and its US sales tax page, checked on July 30, 2026.

Calculate taxes globally on Zoho Books using Commenda

Zoho Books applies sales tax based on the registrations you entered and the date each one started. Commenda calculates on the transaction instead: state, county, city and district for a US sale, and the right VAT rate for an EU one. Product taxability is applied per jurisdiction, so a taxable service and an exempt good are not treated alike.

Track your global exposure from Zoho Books

Zoho Books names nexus monitoring as a reason to add Avalara. Commenda measures your Zoho Books transactions against thresholds in all 50 states and 70+ countries and tells you at 80%, before you cross. A short questionnaire covers physical presence too, because a warehouse or a remote employee never shows up on an invoice.

Automatically remit transactions around the world

In the US, Zoho Books gives you a sales tax liability report and names tax filing as a reason to add Avalara. Commenda builds the return straight from your Zoho Books data, so nothing gets exported or re-keyed. Returns go out across all 50 states, plus EU VAT with OSS and GST in APAC and Canada, with amendments where a period needs correcting.

Manage your customers and exemptions in one place

Zoho Books lets you upload a certificate against a customer or a state, record its expiry, and apply it per jurisdiction rules. Getting the certificate in the first place is the harder half. Commenda requests it from your customer through a portal that can carry your branding, validates each one on upload, and chases the renewals. Batch requests go out to customers who have never sent one.

Consolidation

Why Zoho Books does not know your total exposure

Zoho Books is the ledger for one country at a time. Filing one return means knowing which revenue arrived already taxed, which states you actually owe, and which of your organisations the sale belongs to. Commenda solves that.

  • One organisation is one tax country, and that choice is permanent

Zoho Books runs 17 country editions plus a Global one, and Zoho's own knowledge base says that taxes are handled differently in each edition. Its help centre also states that the organisation's location cannot be changed once set, and that an organisation collecting tax in both the US and Canada cannot manage both countries' registrations in one place. So a US entity and a UK entity are two subscriptions, two datasets, and two tax pictures.

  • Zoho Books taxes the states you declared

Setting up Sales Tax Automation asks for each state you are registered in and the date that registration started. Tax is then applied on transactions from that date onward. Anything you sold into a state you never entered is taxed at zero and counted nowhere. Most states set economic nexus at $100,000 or 200 transactions, and California and New York at $500,000.

  • Zoho itself tells you where the ledger stops

Zoho's own sales tax page says that businesses needing deeper compliance workflows, tax filing, nexus monitoring or registration support should extend Zoho Books with Avalara from the Marketplace. That is an accurate description of the boundary. Zoho Books is where the transaction is recorded. Registration, filing and remittance are a different job, and it is the one we do.

  • One ledger behind every channel

Zoho Books is rarely the only source. A storefront, a marketplace, and a billing platform all feed revenue in, and tax a marketplace already collected is not yours to file again. Every source connects to one ledger, across 100+ supported integrations, with each transaction carrying its origin and any tax already collected. US sales tax and UK VAT are routed to separate accounts so your books stay clean.

Cost of growth

What global indirect tax costs in Zoho Books

Zoho publishes its list prices, and the gating is the point. Sales tax tracking is not in the free plan, multi-currency sits two tiers above it, and the price is per organisation, which matters because one organisation is one tax country. Figures are US-edition list prices in USD, monthly then annual.

The platform works exactly the way I need it to. I have one team member who manages all of our exemption certificates, and that functionality has been particularly efficient for us. It allows him to handle everything seamlessly, making the handoff significantly easier.
