Nexus · Oklahoma

When you owe sales tax in Oklahoma.

Either kind of nexus on its own creates the obligation to register, collect, and remit. Oklahoma applies a sales-only threshold — there is no transaction-count test.

Economic nexus
Threshold
$100,000 in taxable sales delivered into Oklahoma
Measurement type
Sales only — transaction count does not matter
Measurement period
Previous or current calendar year
Included
Taxable sales of tangible personal property — exempt sales, resale transactions, and marketplace-facilitated sales are excluded from the count
Marketplaces
Marketplace sales do not count toward your threshold — sales where a registered marketplace facilitator collects and remits the tax on your behalf are excluded
Physical nexus
Office or business locationEmployees / remote staffWarehouse or inventoryContractors or agentsThird-party fulfillment

Any physical presence in Oklahoma creates nexus immediately, with no sales floor. Remote employees working from Oklahoma addresses are among the most commonly overlooked triggers for out-of-state sellers.

The state authority

Oklahoma Tax Commission — Oklahoma's tax office.

The Oklahoma Tax Commission administers state sales and use tax through its online portal, OkTAP. One login handles registration, filing, and payment — no separate local portals for state-level obligations.

oklahoma.gov/tax

Registration requires a Tax Portal username and password. Your State Tax ID (format SVU-XXXXXXXX-XX) is assigned after registration and used for subsequent filings.

What you can do there
  • Register for a sales tax permit

Register through OkTAP to receive a State Tax ID. Out-of-state sellers should select the use tax permit type.

  • File returns and pay

All returns and payments are submitted through OkTAP using your assigned credentials — ACH or other accepted methods.

  • Look up the rate for any address

The Oklahoma Tax Commission rate lookup returns the combined state, county, and city rate for any Oklahoma delivery address.

  • Verify a sales tax permit

Confirm that a customer's Oklahoma sales tax permit is active before honoring an exemption certificate.

Back-period exposure & voluntary disclosure

Oklahoma participates in the Multistate Tax Commission's voluntary disclosure program, which allows out-of-state sellers to come forward and limit prior-period exposure.

Lookback
Typically limited under the VDA — versus unlimited if the state contacts you first
Penalties
Generally waived under an approved voluntary disclosure agreement
Interest
Still due on unpaid tax for the lookback period
Unfiled returns
No statute of limitations until a return is filed; early disclosure limits exposure

Exemption certificates accepted

Collect a valid certificate at the time of sale and retain it in your records — the burden of proof rests with the seller if the exemption is later challenged.
